43, and the Leap Came From the Foundation
This Sunday was my birthday. I’m 43.
And I’ll be honest — it’s hard to believe the number. When I was younger I couldn’t even picture past my forties. Not in a dark way. I just couldn’t see it. And now here I am, 43, and my first honest reaction is shock. Life goes by so fast. That’s the thing nobody warns you about. It just moves.
But this is a proud birthday. Maybe the proudest one I can remember.
Because this year my body changed. My work took a real leap. And I know exactly where it came from.
It wasn’t from pushing harder.
It came from stepping back.
The year I stopped forcing it
This was the year I finally listened to my body.
I took a step back and worked on my foundation — the boring, basic stuff — so I could build strength in a way that actually lasts. Not the way I used to do it, where I’d force it until something broke and start over on Monday.
And going back to the basics opened my eyes. Really opened them. All the things I used to think were beneath me, or too basic, or not enough — those turned out to be the whole thing. That’s where the strength actually comes from.
I wasn’t starting over. I was finally learning how to build.
Here’s what I want you to hear
I used to think the aching hips and the tight back and the tired mornings were just the cost of getting older. That’s what you’re told, right? You hit a certain age and your body hands you a list of things to work around. So you brace getting out of the car. You skip the bottom shelf. You call it “just my back now” and you keep moving.
I believed that. I really did.
It’s not true.
So much of that stiffness doesn’t come from the number. It comes from a foundation that never got built — or one we dropped the second we went chasing the hard, extreme version of fitness instead. We skip the basics because they look too small to matter.
And the basics are the whole thing.
Where it went
Because of all this, I’m teaching two classes now. Both built on the same idea — strength from the core.
And I’m not teaching theory in either one. I’m teaching what actually worked on my own body. The stuff that was simple enough that I could make progress and build on it. That’s the whole reason it stuck. Simple enough to build on. That’s not a small thing.
And yeah — the body in the mirror changed too. My muscles woke up. I’m reaching for heavier weights. I feel stronger, more like myself, in a way I actually get to keep this time.
But that’s not the door. The door was small. The door was going back to the basics I thought I was too experienced for.
That’s the thing I keep living. The way I trained my body this year is the same way I’m building everything else. Foundation first. Simple enough to come back to. Strong enough to last.
So here’s what I want for you
You don’t need the extreme version. You never did.
You need the foundation. The simple, repeatable, strong-from-the-core version that meets you where you are and gives you something to build on. Not another sprint dressed up as a lifestyle. Something that holds.
And if you paused somewhere along the way — you’re not behind. There’s nothing to restart. You just keep going.
That’s what turned 43 into a birthday I’m proud of.
Still here — and building.
